Country:  East India

Personal and Family Information

Jayanti lives with her mother.  Her duties at home include caring for animals, running errands, and cleaning.  There are three children in the family.  Her mother is sometimes employed as a laborer.

Playing with dolls, jumping rope and hide-and-seek are Jayanti's favorite activities.  In primary school her performance is average and she also regularly attends Sunday school.

Please remember Jayanti in your prayers.  Your love and support will help her to receive the assistance she needs to grow and develop.

Community and Project Information

Jayanti lives on the plains of Krishnapur, home to approximately 89,046 residents.  Typical houses are constructed of dirt floors, adobe walls, and bamboo roofs.  The primary ethnic group and language is Bengali.

The regional diet consists of bananas, chicken, rice, and potatoes.  Common health problems in this area include tuberculosis, malaria, and chicken pox.  Most adults in Krishnapur work as day laborers and earn the equivalent of $25 per month.  This community needs potable water, proper sanitation, and educational assistance.

Our sponsorship allows the staff of Kestopur Child Development Center to provide Jayanti with...

  • Bible teaching,
  • medical checkups,
  • health care,
  • sports,
  • nutritious meals,
  • hygiene supplies,
  • cultural programs,
  • field trips,
  • opportunities for community services,
  • coaching, and
  • progress monitoring.

The center staff will also provide meetings, Bible teachings, and social awareness programs for the parents or guardians of Jayanti.

Country Information

India has a tropical climate in the south and a more temperate climate in the north.  The cool season is from November to March; the dry, hot season is from March to June; and the hot, rainy season is during the remainder of the year.

The average rural Indian family lives in a small hut constructed of mud, bamboo, palm tree trunks, and a roof thatched with dried palm leaves or rice straw.  Rice or wheat cakes and curried vegetables are the main dishes.  Hindi and English are two of the country's 14 official languages.  Its religions includes Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity.

India has been inhabited for more than 4,500 years.  In 1192, Arabs invaded the country, brining with them the Islamic faith.  British influence came with trading companies that set up operations in India in the 1600s.  British rule over India was established in 1783 and lasted until 1947, when Gandhi's independence movement achieved its goal.  Since then, India has been troubled by political instability, religious violence, and tense relations with Pakistan.
